UNA BOMBILLA BOMBA BLACK

Brazilian yerba is ground almost to dust, and an ordinary bombilla clogs on it within two refills. The Black Bomba is made for yerba like that — Brazilians call the style chimarrão — and copes where spring straws give up.

A filter that holds dust

A flat filtering head with dense, fine perforation. The difference from spring and spoon bombillas is simple: with those, the fine fraction either passes straight through into your mouth or seals the holes for good. Here the filtering area is larger and the holes are finer — it clogs more slowly and blows clear more easily.

It is not a narrowly specialised straw for all that. It draws Argentinian and Uruguayan yerba of medium grind, with stems or without, just as calmly. In effect it is a universal choice with reserve capacity for the fine fraction — one straw for a whole cupboard of yerba.

Shape and mouthpiece

The 19 cm length is the working standard: it reaches the bottom of a deep vessel without sticking awkwardly out of a compact one.

The mouthpiece is wide and slightly curved. The bend matters more than it seems: a straight tube meets the lip at an uncomfortable angle, while a curved one rests naturally — especially when the vessel is on a table rather than in your hand.

The body is stainless steel with a black finish. That is not only appearance: marks from water and yerba do not show on dark metal.

Care

Scald it with boiling water before first use. After that — warm water with a mild detergent following every session. It can go in the dishwasher, which is rather an exception among bombillas.

With daily use, run a thin brush through the inner channel once a week: with fine yerba the residue builds up faster.

Who it suits

First of all anyone who drinks Brazilian yerba — Canarias, Barão, Ximango and the like. With those, an ordinary bombilla turns into a trial.

And anyone with different yerbas in the cupboard who does not want a separate straw for each: this one draws practically any grind. It also makes a present — black steel looks markedly dearer than it costs.
